I have been discussing with friends about the Microsoft response to Linux and the open source community. The impact that is having on them is not favorable. Today’s news begs the question, is Microsoft starting to wake up?
In the article titled “Microsoft, Xen to run Windows, Linux side-by-side“, it seems they’re at least dipping a toe in the water.

Many years ago I had the privilege of working with a very smart software architect named John Stoddard. I transferred to Santa Rosa, California to work closer with him, and since then he became one of my mentors.
During that time I met his wife Sally who has the most wonderful personality.
Over the past year as I have been shifting my career direction away from architecture, John and I have not kept in touch as much. Earlier this week I sent an email to him and received a disturbing response from Sally. John had died on August 15th 2005.

Technical support is a consumer safety net that has become a staple service nearly every company in North America provides, or attempts to. It is a costly service. You sell your widget for $20 and fund 12 to 24 hour support to keep the sale and hope for a returning customer.

This story draws parallels between a social experiment and common corporate behavior.
As an experiment some scientists put five monkeys in a cage. A bananah on a wire is hung from the top of the cage.
They monkeys go for the bananah and are immediately dumped with cold water. They do it again and are dumped with cold water. After a while, nobody is touching the bananah. It is ignored.
